Pedagogical Moves to Engage with Meaningful Texts

In this session, six participants would share ways they plan learning activities to engage learners with meaningful texts. Our presenters represent a range of experiences and institutions and include two professors of English education, two practicing English teachers, and two preservice teachers.
Each presenter will focus on pedagogical practices for one of their favorite texts, including A Raisin in the Sun (Lorraine Hansberry), Macbeth (William Shakespeare), Nature (Ralph Waldo Emerson), Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler) and Shadowshapers (Daniel José Older). We will discuss text selection (including using graphic novel versions of some texts), connecting texts to students’ cultural, community, and personal assets, curating differentiated text sets, and utilizing supplementary materials.
