The Illinois Association of Teachers of English invites teachers to nominate their fellow educators for IATE’s Teacher of the Year Award.

Eligibility:

Teachers who teach in the field of English Language Arts and Literacy in the state of Illinois.

Number of Awards:

IATE will award one teacher each in two categories: one teacher of K-8, and one teacher of 9+ (high school or post-secondary).

Award Criteria:

The Teacher Excellence Committee will evaluate nominees demonstrating excellence in innovative and effective teaching, student engagement, service to community through education, service to the profession, and other notable contributions or recognitions.

Award Specifics:

The recipient of the Teacher of the Year award will be recognized at the annual Fall Conference Awards Dinner.  The award recipient’s name and institution may be published in the IATE Newsletter, Conference Program, and Website.  The recipient will be requested to provide a headshot photo, which may also be published.  High school teachers who receive the Teacher of the Year award will be nominated for NCTE’s High School Teacher of Excellence Award.

Application:

Nominators must provide their name and contact information, as well as the name and contact information of the nominee.  Nominators must upload a PDF file of the nominee’s CV or resume and a PDF of a letter of support explaining how the nominee demonstrates excellence in one or more of the following criteria:

  • innovative and effective teaching
  • student engagement
  • service to community through education
  • service to the profession
  • other notable contributions or recognitions.

For high school teachers: for continuation to nomination for NCTE’s High School Teacher of Excellence Award, nominators will be asked to provide the names of other persons from at least TWO different constituencies (principal, supervisor, chairperson, peer, parent, or student) who can provide signed letters of support about contributions in the classroom and excellent practices exhibited by the recipient.

Nominations for recognition at this year’s Fall Conference are due September 15.
