Imagining Democratic Futures Through ELA Classrooms
Imagining Democratic Futures Through ELA Classrooms
Mary Ellen Daneels1
English language arts classrooms are powerful spaces for students to practice democracy through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Drawing on examples from Illinois Democracy Schools and youth community engagement projects, this interactive session explores how student voice, inquiry, and collaborative learning can strengthen literacy skills while fostering civic identity and agency. Participants will experience practical strategies for engaging students in meaningful discussions, evaluating sources, writing for authentic audiences, and connecting classroom learning to community issues. Through classroom vignettes and hands-on protocols, educators will explore how student choice, peer feedback, and shared decision-making can become everyday practices that foster belonging, critical thinking, and civic engagement. Participants will leave with adaptable routines and inquiry frameworks to help students imagine democratic futures—and recognize their own capacity to shape them.
