In this interactive session, English teachers and school leaders will engage in a critical exploration of how white supremacist structures influence and shape the modern literacy environment. While the English classroom is a natural space for expression and storytelling, it is also frequently a site where systemic inequities are reinforced through traditional pedagogical norms and institutional expectations. Participants will critically examine how these structures influence classroom dynamics, participation styles, and the valuation of student voices. By identifying these deep-seated barriers, we will explore practical and immediate ways to disrupt these systems, fostering a culture rooted in genuine equity and inclusivity.
The session focuses on shifting the power balance within the school and classroom to ensure that the study of language serves as a tool for liberation rather than a mechanism for exclusion. We will delve into culturally sustaining strategies and equitable participation models that challenge the status quo, moving beyond surface-level inclusion toward a more profound systemic transformation. By analyzing effective routines that encourage active engagement and mutual respect, educators can dismantle the hierarchies that often silence marginalized perspectives.
Through this work, English educators can create transformative spaces where every person has meaningful opportunities to contribute and interact, building an inclusive community that honors the authenticity of each individual’s voice. Participants will leave with a clear, actionable framework to ensure their schools and classrooms become sites for systemic change, grounded in the continuous work of disrupting inequity and fostering dynamic, equitable engagement for all.
