In this presentation, we will look at the steps teachers and administrators should take when faced with a book challenge. We will discuss all the potential stakeholders involved in the challenge, the chain of command that should be taken to resolve the issue, and how to get outside organizations involved if the challenge proceeds to the highest tiers of resolution.
We will also look at specific strategies in discussing a stakeholder’s concern with a specific text. These strategies will include creating an open dialogue, active listening, and framing the issue in a way that is not accusatory.
The session will include both small group breakouts and whole group discussion. Handouts, links to resources, and a list of steps a department or school might take prior to receiving a book challenge will be provided to all participants.
English Language Arts Teachers, History Teachers, Health and Biology Teachers, School Administrators, and School Librarians would all benefit from this presentation.
